Nic's Story

Nicola was born on 5th February 1980 in Southmead Hospital, and later went to Westbury Park School until she was 8. The Corry family then moved to Wotton-under-Edge where she attended Kingswood Primary and Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School.

After a rather mischievous time at school, Nicola found her saviour in Hairdressing, training at the City of Bristol College. After winning many prizes there she went on to be a Top Stylist at the Clifton Hair Company, Bristol.

In 2001 she left to fulfil her dream to travel in Greece where she met her new found freedom and Fiancé, Brady. There, Nicola lived life to the full; working in a bar called Aquarius, and was always the life and soul of the party!

In 2003, Nicola and Brady settled down to have ‘Alfie’, but just 3 days after the birth Nicola discovered she had a rare cancer.

Nicola had an emergency caesarean due to unknown difficulties during labour, the doctors took biopsies of what they thought were cysts. The results came back positive with Cancer.

Following scans and investigation what they thought was ovarian cancer was found to be abdominal cancer which had spread to the liver. This is a very rare cancer called ‘Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumour ’.

Nicola was recovering from her caesarean and adapting to motherhood. When Alfie was 3 weeks old Nicola began an intense course of Chemotherapy, she went into the hospital every three weeks for her treatment staying for a maximum of five days at a time. During her course of treatment, there were occasions when Nicola had to go back into hospital as her immune system was too low and she needed to be put into isolation away from risk of infection. Nicola’s course of Chemotherapy ended in June 2003 as she had undertaken the maximum amount.

The chemotherapy had managed to reduce the size of the cancer, however there was still a considerable amount left. During her chemotherapy, Nicola had regular treatment of Reiki and Reflexology.

Nicola has taken it upon herself to seek alternative treatment to fight her battle with cancer with regular counselling sessions at the Cancer Help Centre in Bristol. Whilst attending these meetings she found details of Doctor Rosie Daniel who is a consultant specialising in alternative cancer treatments.

Nicola experienced a roller coaster of emotions, Chemotherapy has many side effects mentally and physically, which she had to try to overcome to raise her son with her partner Brady.

Nicola is an inspiration to us all with her positive attitude and her fight against her cancer. With brave courage and determination Nicola fought this awful disease as well as being a fantastic mum to Alfie.

Two years on, she is now at peace from all the pain and fear… Nicky is badly missed by all of us but she lives on through her son Alfie. So loving and beautiful, with infectious laughter, she will never be forgotten.

Our intention is now to go on to create a Charity that will help families with babies who are having to deal with cancer and who do not want to have serious financial worries as well.

Wish us luck.
