FAMILY'S CHARITY TRIBUTE TO TRAGIC NICOLA

A Charity has been launched by family and friends of a popular young Bradley Stoke woman who died of ovarian cancer.Nicola Corry was just 25 when she lost her battle with Desmosplastic Small Round Cell Tumour in May 2005.

Doctors discovered tumours on her ovaries when she gave birth to her son Alfie two years earlier and, despite intensive chemotherapy, the cancer spread to her liver and spleen. While she was ill, her family and friends set up the Nicola Corry Support Foundation to give financial help to Nicola and her fiance, David Brady, through the ordeal.

The support means that Alfie, three, has been able to go to the same nursery and pre-school while David is able to continue in a full-time job.

Now the charity wants to help other young families that have been affected by cancer.Nicola's sister Claire Corry, 29, said: "We wanted to do something positive after Nicola died.
"When she was going through chemotherapy, she found it hard financially looking after a new baby and paying for child care and we realised that it must be hard for lots of families in the same situation, so we kept the charity going to help others."

The ways in which the Nicola Corry Support Foundation can help families includes assisting with child care costs and giving grants to families to help them afford a treat together.

It also wants to fund improvement to NHS facilities and is planning to sponsor a complete refurbishment of the Ward 61 patient's day room at the Bristol Oncology Centre.

Claire said her sister was an inspiration to the family as she battled with cancer. She said: "Nicola was very positive. She was so brave and fought so hard to beat the cancer for Alfie. She always had a smile on her face."

The charity relies on donations and is also looking for volunteers to help with Foundationraising projects.
