Saturday 26 November 2011 - Retainers A
Report: Colin Dawe
Result: Drew 3 - 3

Bad start - they went 1 nil up in 30 seconds . We were not alert and they just sliced through our defence. Worst was to come 2 nil down in 20 minutes!

We were attacking but to no avail our defence came under a lot of pressure . I was stood on the line with our 3 subs , Mr Smee said that Brady was not much in the game when big Chris shot the ball - it rebounded to Brady whose blistering header almost broke the net.

Dave had the ball in the back of the net when their keeper dropped the ball at his feet and he side footed in only to be ruled off side (he swears he was not, but their linesman had a spring in his arm!).

Half-Time: 2 - 1

Disaster! - a third goal to them - 3-1 down! We then contrived to miss a penalty.

2 subs saw Mr Smee and Fowler came on.

Only 4 minutes to go , a corner to us - Fowler stroked the ball across - there was a goal mouth scramble when super sub Mr Smee got stuck in a forced the ball in with a cracking shot 3 -2 .

They countered but our defence was not going to let another goal in all four defenders playing like demons. Then with 1 minute to go the ball was passed out to Neil on the right wing he was some 30 yards out near the side line , he saw a glimpse of the net and let loose a thundering shot , the ball was in the back of the net in seconds , their keeper did not have time to move as the ball flew past him low to his left. 3- 3 brill!!

What a come back 3-1 down with 4 minutes to go . I dont want to go through that excitement to often , my nerves were shot. This game showed what a team we now have. All our team did not give up ,they did not drop their heads they all improved as the game went on. Onwrds and upwards

Full-time: Drew 3 - 3

The Bristol Downs Association Football League is a completely standalone league. It has four divisions which have relegation and promotion within themselves but if you win Division One you are the Downs League champions, there is no promotion into any other league. This is what makes it so unique.

It is also thought to be the largest independent standalone league in Europe.

The Downs League was formed in 1905 with 30 founder members, two of the founder member clubs, St Andrews and Sneyd Park, remain in the league to this day.
