Saturday 17th September 2011 - Sneyd Park B
Report: Colin Dawe. Photos: Rod Allsopp, John Corry
Result: Won 3-2

New players joined us this saturday, Neil (a keeper ) and ''welsh'' Tom (not strictly a new player; Tom returns after shattering his knee back in march 2010 - for one of these players it turned out to be an eventful game.

The match started with Sneyd Park making the better moves and pummeling our defence but some brave keeping by Neil and some stubborn resistance , combined with some crunching tackles and we held out. We did make some attacking moves to no avail.

Then Scott took a free kick on the right the ball appeared to be flying high and wide and suddenly it dropped and spun in and hit the post rebounded across the goal line; a narrow escape for them.

Nearing half time an attack down the right was latched onto by' ''welsh'' Tom who stepped around a defender shot the ball struck the upright and went in.

1-0

To Sneyd Park's credit they kept attacking and a lovely glancing headed ball by Magnum presented them with a gift of an own goal (see photo below)

1-1 Half -Time

Entertaining, good end to end football prevailed in the early stages of the second half then a miss-hit shot fooled Neil in our goal (he dived one way the ball went the other).

1-2

We are made of sterner stuff these days and replied with a free kick some 25 yards out on the right. Tom struck it like a hammer, Magnum jumped over the ball and ball went straight in.

2-2

Now we were in top gear now to end an attack from the left wing Tom cut inside and tapped the ball in ; a hat-trick in his first game in 18 months what a nice welcome return to the fold.

3-2 Full-time

Beautifully flighted glancing header from Magnum leaving the keeper no chance! One snag - it was AT THE WRONG END!!!!!!!!!!

The Bristol Downs Association Football League is a completely standalone league. It has four divisions which have relegation and promotion within themselves but if you win Division One you are the Downs League champions, there is no promotion into any other league. This is what makes it so unique.

It is also thought to be the largest independent standalone league in Europe.

The Downs League was formed in 1905 with 30 founder members, two of the founder member clubs, St Andrews and Sneyd Park, remain in the league to this day.
