Saturday 10th September 2011 - Retainers A
Report: Colin Dawe
Result: Won 5-0

Yes 5 nil.

What a result everyone played their part in this one, from little Chris in goal to Magnum up front.

They believe it or not started the brighter causing our defence some problems but we held out. Then a disaster Andy M was judged to have handled in the area , the penalty that ensued was blasted over the bar - whoops!!

We absorbed the pressure and 5 minutes to half time we were awarded a free kick some 23yards out on the right wing ; Scott measured up and sent the kick blasting past their keeper into the top left hand corner of the net.

Half-time: 1 - 0

The second half started with both sides playing end to end football with both keepers bringing off good saves. Another free kick and up stepped Scott this time some 29 yards out on left again - Guess what? The same result the keeper stood rooted has the ball flew into the top left corner of his net.

2-0l

This did not seem enough, they kept up pressure on us. Then a wonder goal , Kai broke down the right wing cut in field skipped 2 tackles , the third tackle hit him off balance, he crawled around the 4th man with the ball still at his feet regained his feet and half volleyed from the left hand side of the area to the amazement of their keeper who dived in vain has the ball blistered past him into the roof of the net.

There was still more to come - Brady was sent clear down the left from a Fowler pass , he sprung into the area to finish with deadly accuracy.

And there's more - Magnum beat 2 tackles and sent a left footed cross onto Fowlers head, it went sizzling into the net (Fowlers first ever headed goal). That was it 5 - 0, everyone played their part.what a feeling!

Full-time 5 - 0

The Bristol Downs Association Football League is a completely standalone league. It has four divisions which have relegation and promotion within themselves but if you win Division One you are the Downs League champions, there is no promotion into any other league. This is what makes it so unique.

It is also thought to be the largest independent standalone league in Europe.

The Downs League was formed in 1905 with 30 founder members, two of the founder member clubs, St Andrews and Sneyd Park, remain in the league to this day.
